                                 First Mayor of Chatham


Joseph Black Benson M.D., was born in Chatham on January 11, 1854. He was a son of Dr. Stafford Benson and a brother of Dr. John Benson.

Dr. Stafforf Benson settled in Chatham in 1831, after emigrating from Devonshire, England. In 1835 he married Sophia Elizabeth, daughter of Michael Samuel, lumber merchant of Chatham.

Joseph was educated at Chatham Grammar School and later at Fredericton Clooegiate School. He studied medicine at McGill University in Montreal where he was considered an excellent scholar and won several academic prizes.

In June of 1896 he became the first mayor of Chatham. While serving in this position he had 1000 coins minted to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
