We know when and where he was born from multiple sources many years ago - Feb 1849 - Miramichi NB
We know who he married and when - Mary Lavina Gardner - Jan 1880
We know their children and many grandchildren and great(s) grandchildren
His death certificate indicates Frank McLain and Rebecca Mathews as parents, but no where else can their names be found.
Their marriage certificate does not indicate parents for either

Public Family Trees and Canadian Census records have been used as the base / check
The 1851 Canadian census only has one William Mclean born in 1849, plus or minus a year, son of William McLean and Margaret Campbell.
There are no census records for 1831 and 1842 - NB or Canada East
The 1861 and 1871 Canadian census indicate a William was living with these parents
He is not listed in the 1881 Canadian census

We have a Baptism record for June 1849 which does not list a middle name.

The 1880 US census has Mary listed as single, living at home.
We have not found any records as to where he was between 1871 and 1880
So far we have not found William in the 1880 US census
Most of the 1890 US Census records were destroyed by a fire.

To the best of our knowledge he is the only member of his family to have emigrated to the US

We are trying to determine if there is or is not a link based on the data we have and have found. Some of the data is circumstantial.

Any documentation to prove or disprove would be helpful.
